Beta 3 takes Android 15 to Platform Stability: Stable release soon

Google is impressively running its Android 15 Beta Program for Pixel phones and OnePlus also joins the beta program with OnePlus 12 and OnePlus Open. Today, Google announced the Android 15 Beta 3 update, which takes the new operating system to Platform Stability. It’s a notable milestone, that Google reached as scheduled, taking the Stable release closer, which is scheduled for August 2024.

Platform stability means that all app-facing behavior in the developer APIs and OS are now final, and won’t change until a mass release.

Android 15 Beta 4 is scheduled to be released in July 2024, followed by a stable release expected by August. Google has made notable Passkey UI-related changes to the experience and functionality through Beta 3. The update is available for devices ranging from the Pixel 6 to the recently launched Pixel 8a.

Android 15 beta 3 includes a new feature called Single-Step Passkey support. This allows developers to easily incorporate biometric security (fingerprint or, on supported devices, face unlock) to sign in to their apps.

In addition to Single-Step Passkey support, this update brings improvements to the volume menu can no longer be minimized, the ‘Speakers and displays’ label removed, Device & app notifications turned to Notification read, reply & control, a shortcut to Color contrast preferences in Settings > Display, and Home Controls screensaver for Pixel Tablet.

Bluetooth resolved issues

• Resolved an issue where Bluetooth LE scans could persist in the system after an app crash.
• Fixed a bug in Bluetooth LE legacy advertising, where AdvertisingSet.setScanResponseData did not return ADVERTISE_FAILED_DATA_TOO_LARGE when scan response data exceeded the 31-byte limit.
• Fixed a bug that caused LE connection failures on the GATT server by passing the address type from BluetoothGattServer.connect to native.
